From sequoia seeds to sumac branches, life often relies on fire for growth. Hear from some of the people at the forefront of California’s fire management about how tending fires builds resilience for forests and people alike.

  • Deniss Martinez, PhD candidate at UC Davis, explains the critical importance of centering Indigenous communities in making decisions around the environment, and how to take actionable steps toward this through collaborative projects and shared governance.

  • Ron Goode, tribal chairman of the North Fork Mono, shares insights into the history of wildfires, how they have become the destructive force we see today, and how smaller, human-managed fires across the landscape can aid habitat restoration and set new life cycles in action.

  • Elizabeth Azzuz from the Cultural Fire Management Council gives an overview of the ways prescribed burns support Indigenous cultural traditions as well as the environment itself—and how they can foster deeper connections with the land in the process.
